Papers, 1834-1880.

The collection comprises the papers of Caleb Mills and his son Benjamin Marshall Mills. The Cabeb Mills letters include correspondence between Mills and personal friends and colleagues, Benjamin Marshall Mills, General John P. Hawkins, and former students. Several letters concern the recruitment of African-Americans in the Civil War. Other material includes addresses and lectures regarding Mills' efforts to improve public education in Ind., published writings, sermons, and letters from missionaries in India and Iran. Benjamin Mills' letters and documents contain detailed information about the 49th U.S. Colored Infantry. Two diaries are included in this material. Also included are letters from Caleb Mills to Edmund O. Hovey and an item from Selina Wyatt concerning the establishment of a female seminary in the Wabash Valley.

Mills, Caleb, 1806-1879

Caleb Mills (1806-1879) was born in Dunbarton, N.H. and graduated from Dartmouth College (Ind.) in 1828. In 1833 he began teaching at the newly opened Wabash Teachers Seminary and Manual Labor College (later Wabash College). Mills is best known for his theories and activities concerning public education in Ind. He married Sarah Marshall in 1833.
